Its important to make sure that air is consistently moving in your living space. Some simple ways to do this include having your HVAC system serviced to ensure it is working properly, opening windows to allow fresh air in, and utilizing bath and kitchen exhaust fans. Particularly if you are having work done or cleaning with chemical products, its important to have proper ventilation to get chemicals out and fresh air in.

Make Your Home a Smoke-Free Zone

Smoking outside is the best way to maintain a healthier home. The smoke exhaled from cigarettes contains more than 4000 different chemicals. Apart from being bad for health, these chemicals can cling to and build up on surfaces that are exposed to it, causing discoloration and damage.

Maintain a Clean Home

Even the tidiest of homes is bound to have a little dust from time to time, particularly in homes with pets. It is important to vacuum at least on a weekly basis and with a proper vacuum. Use a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuum or a vacuum with a sealed HEPA filter and be thorough in vacuuming the entire home. Utilize natural cleaning products with limited chemicals whenever possible.

Maintain Proper Humidity

Humidity should be kept below 60% in the summer and below 40% in the winter to prevents condensation, water damage, and mold from occurring. Utilize exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen to avoid moisture build up. Keep an eye out for water leaks around the home and have them fixed immediately. Use a dehumidifier to help control moisture and allergens.

Add Air Purifying Plants to Your Home

While the pollutant removal rate of plants is small, studies have shown that certain plants can be used to eliminate certain toxic agents. Peace lilies, gerbera daises, bamboo palm trees, and more can be decorative while helping to improve the air quality of your home. Make sure you do not over water plants and provide proper drainage. Soil contains mold so you may want to consider removing plants from living areas if allergies persist.

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

Air filters on HVAC units are put in place to capture particulates from entering into the living space of your home. Dirty filters are far less effective. In a home with pets, or where the occupants have allergies filters should be changed every 30-45 days. In homes where neither of these things occur, filter changes can be done every 6 months with periodical checks in between to make sure they are not dirty. When selecting a new filter, the best option is a MERV-6 or -8 rated filter. For filters with a higher rating, consult your HVAC contractor. Taping around the edge of a filter at wall or ceiling mounted returns can provide even cleaner air.
